Swindells Satellite

Description: Swindells of Salem is a satellite of the Swindells Child Disability Resource Center, a program of the Providence Health, in Portland. Swindells connects families, caregivers and friends of children with disabilities to resources, information and training specific to disabilities and conditions. Our resource Specialist, Dee Tafolla, is available to provide information on educational, recreational, therapies and other day-to-day issues. Families and caregivers visit or contact Swindells seeking answers to many of the questions that surface in their everyday lives. The services at the Swindells of Salem are free and include the Life Care Notebook, Lending Library, Resource Assistance, and the Parent Resource Group.

Nutrition and Autism, April 5

Description: Nutrition and Cooking Class for Parents that have Children with Autism. Learning Through Experience and Research: Introduction by Dr. Mickey Pardew, WOU and GEM Board Member. The speakers included Linda Lee, RN, a parent, and Denise Cedar, RD, CDE. Class also included a Lifesource cooking demonstration – Pizza for kids. Lifesource products and samples were provided.

The class was taught in the Gehlar Wellness Kitchen at the Salem Hospital CHEC. We held only one class due to low class participation.

NICU Parent Mentoring Program, beginning in May

Description: A Parent Mentoring Program (PMP) for the Salem Hospital NICU. The parents targeted for mentoring will typically be those whose child was born before 32 weeks, or anticipate a two week stay or longer in the NICU. A family will be closely matched with a volunteer Parent Mentor (PM) based age of child at birth, diagnosis, and any other similarities as deemed appropriate. The volunteer PM will contact the family within 24 hours of the birth and make daily contact with the family for the duration of the NICU stay. Contact can continue past the NICU stay as the family and volunteer PM feel is appropriate.

START Training, April 17

Description: Held training at CHEC. Training included a basic training and train the trainer. The hands-on START trainings help practices:

  1. Improve developmental and behavioral screening in accordance with AAP policy statements and Bright Futures guidelines.
  2. Improve understanding and utilization of standard developmental, behavioral and psychosocial screening tools.
  3. Learn proper documentation, coding and billing of screening tools.

Day of the Child, a program of Juntos Podemos~Together We Can Family Center

Description: This was Juntos Podemos annual celebration for children with special needs and their families. The event is held at the First Free Methodist Church. The activities for children include face painting, crafts, break dancing, a visit from the sheriff’s department and their vehicles, a bouncy castle, a petting pony, and lunch. The church gymnasium is full of kids having a fun time and running freely. It is a great time for families to get together to celebrate their children. There were over 200 in attendance.

RISE Conference, a program of OrPTI

Description: OrPTI’s annual conference for parents of children with special needs was held at the Salem Conference Center. The conference is two full days of various breakout sessions with keynote speakers each day at lunch. The keynote speakers were Rep. Sara Gehlser and Logan and Laurie Olson from Logan Magazine. All the breakout sessions are posted on line at http://www.orpti.org/RISE2010final.htm

Community Partners: Oregon Parent Training Institute (OrPTI)

Our Role: Provided 10 scholarships for families to attend.

ADHD Practical Skills Lecture May 7

Description: As part of the CCN lecture series, a lecture for parents who have children with ADHD was given by Dr. Ross Quackenbush, a Salem Psychologist, on May 6th at 7pm at the Salem Hospital Rehabilitation Center. His presentation discussed strategies that parents can use to assist their children with homework and to establish effective discipline. The event was free. Spanish interpretive services were provided. No childcare was provided. 55 parents, grandparents, and caregivers attended.
